How to leave Elavon
Elavon is a US-owned acquirer with significant UK SMB share, particularly via reseller deals. Exit specifics depend heavily on whether you signed direct or via a reseller (Independent Sales Organisation, ISO).
Contract specifics
- Notice period
- 90 to 180 days for direct contracts; reseller contracts vary materially.
- Exit fees
- Direct contracts often charge a "service termination fee" plus terminal-return fees. Reseller contracts can include early-exit penalties tied to the reseller, not Elavon directly.
- Terminal return
- Required. Address is reseller-dependent if signed via an ISO.
What typically happens
Identify the actual contract counterparty first. If it is a reseller, exit them, not Elavon. If Elavon direct, written notice 90 days before the renewal anniversary keeps things clean.
Where merchants typically move
- Dojo Go
- SumUp Solo
- Square Terminal
- Direct acquirers if the reseller markup was the issue
Watch outs
- Reseller mark-up, your effective rate may be 0.5 to 1 percentage point higher than direct Elavon pricing for the same terminals.
- Contract assignment between resellers without merchant consent.
- Consolidated bills from a reseller make rate transparency difficult.
